An Update on Britney Spears’ Conservatorship

Last month, we wrote an article on Britney Spears’ conservatorship battle. In short, she told fans and the court that her relationship with her conservator, who also happens to be her father, is largely an abusive one. She claimed that Mr. Spears had been leveraging his legal power to make money off of her talents, and that she was lacking the freedoms that she deserved.

Since our last update, there has been a major revelation – it appears that Mr. Spears plans to give Britney exactly what she’s requesting.

Media Outcry Over Conservatorship

After Britney’s latest call to the public, there’s been a major media outcry. Both fans and members of the press have gone out of their way to point out the poor hand that Spears had been dealt, calling it a travesty. She herself has even gone so far as to say she isn’t going to perform another show while her father is still in charge. The negative publicity certainly hasn’t helped Mr. Spears’ image, and it may have made an impact on his status as conservator to Britney. According to his lawyers, he plans to work with the courts to facilitate “an orderly transition to a new conservator.”

No Admission of Guilt

While Mr. Spears’ announcement was a surprising one, it shouldn’t be confused as an admission of guilt. In fact, he initially rejected Britney’s request after her new lawyer filed in court to have her father immediately suspended or removed from his position as conservator of her estate. He defended his actions up to this point, and said that everything he did was in the best interest of his daughter.

What to Expect Next

At the moment, Mr. Spears’ only request is that the transition does not happen right away. His camp says there are “no urgent circumstances justifying Mr. Spears’ immediate suspension,” but admitted that he would likely step aside sooner than later, once he can resolve some conservatorship-related matters, such as financial accounting for the last few years.

At the end of the day, Mr. Spears’ lawyers finished his statement by saying that this action was ultimately taken in order to put Britney first. “It is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” the lawyers said, “Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”
